Comfortably Quiet Into the Weekend - Rainy Blocking Pattern 2 Weeks Out??

Comfortably Quiet Into the Weekend - Rainy Blocking Pattern 2 Weeks Out??

It's hard to get too indignant about lukewarm sunshine, although I have to catch myself some days. We are still running a long term rainfall deficit (still down 4-6" - more up north) so a 5-day soaking rain event would look wonderful right about now. I don't see that looking into next week, but long range models are hinting at a rainy blocking pattern by the end of September.

MN Drought Eases Slightly From Last Week

Drought Eases Slightly - Nicer Than Average Holiday Weekend Weather

So I think we may just have this weather-thing down: schedule rain for weekdays (preferably at night) and save the sunshine for weekends, especially holiday weekends. Then everyone is happy, right? Right? Sorry - still can't hear you. A damp Friday should give way to ample quantities of blue sky Saturday into Labor Day.

Hurricane Ida at Landfall Midday Sunday

It's Official: We Dented The Drought

A dry, comfortable sky lingers into Wednesday with daytime highs near 80F and comfortable dew points in the 50s. We tangle with bands of showers and T-storms Thursday, again early next week - each puff of progressively cooler air preceded by puddles. ECMWF predicts highs in the 60s next week. Savor lukewarm this week. Check the blog for more details. -Todd Nelson

Hurricane Ida

Hurricane Ida A Major Threat To Louisiana

Major Hurricane Ida make a landfall PM Sunday along the Gulf Coast. Closer to home, today will be dry and siren-free with lower humidity and a few sunny peeks. A sunny, quiet start to the week gives rise to another surge of T-storms Thursday into Saturday, and sweatshirts may return by Labor Day up north.

Enhanced Severe Risk PM Saturday

Thunderstorms May Turn Severe Later Saturday

Another half inch of rain may fall today, and an "enhanced risk" of severe storms implies large hail and damaging winds. Meanwhile Hurricane Ida could become a major category 4 storm before landfall with 140mph winds somewhere along the Louisiana Coast. Check the blog for more details. -Todd Nelson

Tropical Storm Ida

A Month's Worth of Rain Next 36 Hours?

A nearly stationary frontal boundary acts as a thunder-magnet into Saturday night. ECMWF (European model) prints out 3-6 inches and a few spots may see 8 inches. Flash flooding is possible in some towns. Check the blog for more details.

Multiple Rounds of Heavy Thunderstorms Next 60 Hours - Potential For Another 1-3"

Multiple Rounds of Heavy Thunderstorms Next 60 Hours - Potential For Another 1-3"

It's weird keeping the Doppler plugged in for extended periods of time. For most of the summer it was Palm Springs with Lakes: day after day of hot sunshine, strong winds, occasional smoke - a few fires upwind. More heavy thunderstorms are expected between now and Saturday night, putting another big dent in the worst drought since 1988. Many of us will pick up 1-3" of rain by late Saturday night (most of closer to 1-2" I suspect). Now that it's almost Labor Day, now we get the downpours we should have seen back in June.

Drought Comparisons to 1988 As Strong T-storms Arrive Later Today

Drought Comparisons to 1988 As Strong T-storms Arrive Later Today

Our historic drought continues to deepen, and estimates are it will take 8-9" of rain over the span of many months to pull out of this gaping rainfall deficit. Stating the obvious: any rain at this point is good news for soil moisture and lowering the wildfire threat across the state. One such rain event is shaping up tonight as we chip away at what is turning into the worst statewide drought since 1988
