Last week's column about changes in store for Comcast's standard cable subscribers brought in lots of e-mails. First, a clarification: Subscribers will now be able to get On Demand programming but only on the TV attached to the set top box, not TV sets attached to the new, smaller digital adapters (DTAs). I compiled readers' most common questions. Comcast spokesman Dave Nyberg provided the answers.
Q Is it possible to watch one program and record another under the new system?
A Yes, if a customer uses two digital devices on their TV/VCR. One DTA is connected to the TV and one to the VCR. A splitter is also necessary and will be provided at no charge. With a single DTA, it is not possible to watch one program while recording another.
Q When recording under the new system, do the VCR and TV need to be set to Channel 3?
A Yes, and the customer chooses the channel to be recorded on the digital device.
Q Can I still record two or more programs on different channels at different times on the same day on my VCR? I don't want a DVR.
A Yes, the digital set-top box can be programmed to change channels in conjunction with the VCR. Older set-top boxes may not have this function. Subscribers can exchange the old unit for a new one at a Comcast payment center. The smaller DTAs do not perform this automatic channel change function.
Q What about customers with digital TVs with ATSC or QAM tuners? Can they still get free local HD channels?
