Amtrak returns to rails, skipping 2 stops

Amtrak has resumed rail service between the Twin Cities and Chicago for the first time since southeastern Minnesota was hit with massive flooding a week ago.

Amtrak has resumed rail service between the Twin Cities and Chicago for the first time since southeastern Minnesota was hit with massive flooding a week ago.

For the past week, Amtrak passengers were bused between Minneapolis and Chicago because flooding damaged the tracks. Amtrak's Empire Builder train is now using tracks on the east side of the Mississippi River owned by the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad.

Because of that, the train bypasses regular stops in Winona and Red Wing. Amtrak spokesman Marc Magliari said that passengers en route to those cities are being transported partially by bus. Westbound passengers are being bused from La Crosse to their final destination. Eastbound passengers are getting on buses in St. Paul.

Magliari said the detour will continue at least through Monday. Repairs are being made to the Canadian Pacific tracks on the west side of the river.
