Minneapolis racer sets Birkie record

HAYWARD, WIS. — Caitlin Compton pf Minneapolis set a record Saturday when she won the women's freestyle race at the 38th American Birkebeiner cross-country ski rac.

Compton finished the 50-kilometer race in 2 hours, 15 minutes, 26 seconds. The second- and third-place women skiers also broke Rebecca Dussault's mark of 2:18.18.1 set in 2010.

In the men's division of the freestyle race, Norwegian Tore Martin Gundersen won in 2:32.8 seconds.

Juergen Uhl of Burlington, Vt., won the Birkie Classic, a 54-kilometer race, for the second year in a row. His time was 2:28:47.8. Jennie Bender of Minneapolis won the women's title with a time of 2:50:09.3.
