Two weeks after being run over at a busy Blaine intersection, a pedestrian has died and his daughter is pleading with the driver to surrender to police to help ease her pain.

Bob Johnson, 56, of Fridley, was in a crosswalk about 1:30 a.m. on Dec. 3, when a car ran a red light and struck him, police said Monday. Johnson was hospitalized and sent home to recover. However, a blood clot developed and he died Saturday, his daughter said.

Police Lt. Dan Pelkey said Johnson was walking on 85th Avenue from the Old Chicago restaurant on the east side of University Avenue and had a pizza box in his hands. Johnson was looking down at his cellphone on top of the box when the southbound car ran the light and struck him, the lieutenant said.

"I know accidents happen, I know people gets scared," his daughter, Martha Chirpich said Monday. "I just want someone to come forward and tell me they are sorry for what they did to my dad. For someone to admit that they know what they did would help."

Pelkey said investigators have only a few details about the car that hit Johnson, all of which came from the victim.

After being treated for internal injuries and broken bones at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, Johnson went home Wednesday, his daughter wrote.

"He was in such good spirits and couldn't wait to start his rehab," she wrote. "He said to me, 'I can't wait to go out and do things with you again. We can go fishing.' And then my life came crashing down," when her mother gave her the news of her his death Saturday.

Anyone with information about the car that struck Johnson or the driver is urged to contact Blaine police at 763-785-6168.
