Vikings sign linebacker Mitchell

The Vikings have announced the signing of free agent linebacker Marvin Mitchell, a minor move made to bolster the team's depth at linebacker. Mitchell, 27, is entering his sixth season in the NFL. He spent his first four seasons in a back-up role in New Orleans and played last season with the Dolphins.

Mitchell had 30 tackles, a sack, an interception and a forced fumble last season in Miami. In 2009, he saw limited action in 14 games (including two starts) as part of the Saints' Super Bowl championship team.

Mitchell played his college ball at Tennessee and was a seventh-round selection by New Orleans in 2007. He will likely be relied on mostly as a special teams contributor with the Vikings while also competing for playing time in a linebacking corps that is headlined by Chad Greenway, Erin Henderson and Jasper Brinkley. Other linebackers currently on the roster are Solomon Elimimian, Larry Dean and Tyrone McKenzie.
