PORT WASHINGTON, Wis. — The breakwaters in eastern Wisconsin's Port Washington are deteriorating, creating a risk to businesses and a We Energies power plant.

Mayor Tom Mlada tells WISN-TV ( ) the breakwaters have deteriorated enough that a major winter storm on Lake Michigan could take out big chunks of the walls. That would put businesses and others at risk.

Mlada says the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has posted signs on the breakwaters, warning people to keep off. He says that shows the federal government believes the jetties built in the 1930s are failing and the push now is to get federal funding for repairs.

Mlada says the city needs to "be the squeaky wheel."
