Davis, Sletta help U women's hockey to shutout of Minnesota State Mankato

Sarah Davis scored her first two goals of the season and Shyler Sletta stopped 20 shots in her first career start in net as the No. 2 Gophers women's hockey team beat Minnesota State Mankato 3-0 at Ridder Arena on Thursday night.

Emily West assisted on both Davis goals, which came at at 16 minutes, 42 seconds of the first period and at 1:59 of the second. They were the 12th and 13th goals in the sophomore's career.

Megan Bozek added a goal late in the second period, capping a period in which the Gophers (6-1, 4-1 WCHA) outshot the Mavericks 18-2.

Ali Altmann made 49 saves for Minnesota State (4-3, 0-1).


• Edina High School product and former Drake rower Chelsea Smith won a pair of bronze medals this week at the XVI Pan American Games. Smith, making her first national team appearance, helped push USA Rowing to five total medals through Wednesday. "For how young we are as athletes, we were composed," Smith said. She paired with fellow first-timer Michelle Sechser to finish third in the lightweight women's double in a time of 7 minutes, 18.88 seconds. Smith and Sechser teamed with Catherine Reddick and Megan Walsh to finish third in women's quadruple sculls at 6:39.36.

• Tickets for the 2012 NCAA Division I men's hockey West Regional, co-hosted by the University of Minnesota and Xcel Energy Center on March 24-25, will go on sale Friday. If the Gophers qualify for the NCAA tournament, the Gophers will be assigned to play in the West Regional. All-session packages for the two-day event are priced at $90.
