A 19-year-old from Maplewood was arrested late Saturday night in connection with a shooting outside a liquor store that left one man dead and another wounded.

The suspect was apprehended in a car shortly before midnight and remained in the Ramsey County jail without bail Sunday night.

The shooting that killed Terrence J. Woods, 25, of St. Paul happened about 8:40 p.m. Saturday at a busy strip mall outside Merwin Liquors at the corner of Larpenteur Avenue and Rice Street, said Police Chief Paul Schnell.

Woods died at Regions Hospital, where a second man, Jamil I. Ellis, 24, also of St. Paul, is being treated for multiple leg wounds. He is expected to survive, Schnell said.

Schnell said the initial investigation has led to the theory that the people in the car wanted the men to buy them alcohol. The men refused, exchanged words with the shooting suspect and went into the store. When they came out, shots were fired from the car, Schnell said.

Another man with Woods and Ellis ran from the scene, Schnell said.

"Investigators continue to seek the full identity and location of the remaining suspects," Schnell said in a statement.

"It appears to be an act of senseless violence," he said. "We are committed to finding everyone responsible for this crime to ensure justice and accountability."
