Sheriff’s officers from Ramsey County drilled a series of holes in Keller Lake on Tuesday afternoon in preparation for another search with cadaver dogs in the case of missing St. Paul resident Kira Trevino.

Deputies used snowmobiles to mark a large area of ice at the southern end of the lake, near where divers searched last week, then used augers to drill several holes.

Sgt. Paul Paulos, a police spokesman, said dogs will search for a scent, but he couldn’t specify when that would happen.

The augering comes more than a week after evidence was found in the area, including a pillow that had blood matching Trevino’s DNA.

Ramsey County sheriff’s water patrol deputies found a jacket Monday on the bank of a creek at the southern end of the lake.

About six items of interest were recovered from the park over the weekend. Police have not said if any of the recent finds are related to the case, and Paulos cautioned that there could be unrelated debris at the park.

The pillow and clothing were found at the park more than a week ago. A hole in the lake was also discovered at that time, and cadaver dogs were brought out.

The dogs indicated that there was a scent from the hole, prompting divers to search an 85-foot radius around the hole last Tuesday. Nothing was found. The small lake, which has a maximum depth of 8 feet, covers an area of less than 30 city blocks.

Trevino, 30, was last seen Feb. 21 leaving the Mall of America with her husband, Jeffery Trevino, 39. Her husband was arrested a few days later and charged with two counts of second-degree murder in her disappearance, based on physical evidence found in the couple’s home. Her family told police that she planned to leave him.

Authorities believe Kira Trevino is dead based on “copious” amounts of blood found in the couple’s rented house on E. Iowa Avenue.
