A 23-year-old Eagan woman accused of shooting and wounding her father during a quarrel at the man's Woodbury home last year has been sentenced to probation and home detention.

Amber A. Rabideau was arrested Feb. 22 in the shooting of her father, James J. Rabideau, wounding him in the abdomen and hip, the complaint says. The two had been arguing over whether to allow Amber Rabideau's son, then 3, who was being cared for by her father and stepmother, to have an overnight visit with her. Custody of the boy has been in dispute in a separate court case.

Amber Rabideau had been charged with three felonies; two were dismissed. She pleaded guilty to second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon.

Washington County District Judge Elizabeth Martin sentenced her last week to 90 days in jail, most of which will be served as home detention with electronic monitoring. She also was ordered to serve five years of probation, pay restitution and have no contact with James Rabideau, among other conditions.

Woodbury police found James lying in his kitchen with two .22-caliber bullet wounds just after 10 a.m. Nearby Royal Oaks Elementary School was briefly put on lockdown after the shooting was reported.

Amber Rabideau and James Rabideau gave differing accounts of the shooting. James Rabideau said he left a bedroom where he was arguing with his daughter to get a drink of water, the complaint said. When he returned, Amber was holding a .22-caliber pistol that he had kept in a closet. He hit Amber as he tried to wrestle the gun away, the complaint said, and "the next thing he remembered was a loud noise which he thought he heard twice."

According to Amber Rabideau's version, her father grabbed her and pushed her down, the complaint said, and "the next thing she remembered was something 'prickly' being placed in her hand and hearing the gun go off." She said she believed her father shot himself in an effort to take her child from her.

Amber admitted first calling her lawyer after Rabideau was shot, and did not offer help or call 911, the complaint said.
