Ida is forecast to become a Hurricane Sunday as it passes very near Mexico'sYucatan Peninsula.Ida quickly gained strength early Saturday after it emerged north ofHonduras into the western Caribbean. Atmospheric conditions are favorable forIda to continue to strengthen through Sunday.

Ida is expected to pass just east of the resort cities of Cancun and CozumelSunday afternoon. It may be close enough to bring hurricane force winds. Heavyrain fall is likely. In fact, pouring rain started to fall across Cancun earlySaturday. Flooding is likely.

Western Cuba will also get hit hard as Ida passes. Hurricane Conditions arepossible across the western tip of the Island nation. Havana, Cuba should notexperience hurricane conditions. But, flooding is a big concern for Cuba'sCapital.

After affecting Cancun and western Cuba Ida will enter the southern Gulf ofMexico. It is not early what will happen to Ida afterwards. It will experiencecolder water and increases wind shear. So, it will probably weaken. Residentson the central and eastern Gulf Coast should pay close attention to the latestupdates on Ida.
