St. Paul hummingbird catches a flight to Texas

After taking an errant left turn to Minnesota, Wrong-way Rufous has finally made his way down south for the winter, thanks to a private jet supplied by an anonymous donor. The Wildlife Rehabilitation Center of Minnesota said Monday that the rufous hummingbird — not often seen in these parts, and certainly not in November — was flown south this weekend and released Sunday in Texas.

The tiny rufous hummingbird usually winters in Mexico and wouldn’t last long in a Minnesota winter, but the bird is now with a Roseville wildlife hospital, which is trying to place it on a big bird headed south to resume its annual migratory trek.
