LIHUE, Hawaii A mother who saved one son from a strong ocean current off the island of Kauai died after after a failed attempt to save another son.
Thirty-two-year-old Jennifer White of Gunnison, Colo., brought her eight-year-old son to shore on Monday, then swam back into the water to attempt a rescue of her nine-year-old boy. White lost consciousness and suffered injuries during the effort.
A bystander rescued White, who was in critical condition until she died.
Authorities say scuba divers and other rescuers went looking for the nine-year-old.
They also are looking for a 17-year-old missing since Saturday in a separate incident.
A Coast Guard spokeswoman says waves were in the eight-foot range with winds blowing at about 20 miles per hour.
