Fireworks accident: Boy could lose sight

A North Dakota boy was burned in the face and could lose his sight in at least one eye after fireworks exploded in his face.

David Mitchell, 12, of Hankinson, was hospitalized in satisfactory condition Thursday in Minneapolis.

He said he and his friends were playing with fireworks on Tuesday when he picked up one.

"I thought it was a dud," he said. "I went up to it and it exploded in my face.

"I burned my ear, my nose, both my eyes and my whole entire face ... it felt like I was on fire," he said.

He was being treated in the burn unit of Hennepin County Medical Center.

"He has second-degree burns on his face," said his mother, Teresa. "Once his right eye heals, which is starting to heal, he should regain sight in it. But he may not regain sight in his left eye."
