Jody Gumlia Parker

Jody Gumlia Parker

"I have fought the good fight. I have finished the race, I have kept the faith" (2 Timothy 4:7).

Surrounded by family, Jody Gumlia Parker died peacefully at her home in Indian Wells, CA, on May 3, 2024. She lived 92 amazing years, and it was only her body that finally gave way to God's call. Her spirit, her faith, her love for family and friends, and her ability "to connect" people were strong until the very end.

Jolanda Lynn Folson was born to Aldis and Leonard Folson on April 10, 1932, in Hoople, ND, a small town in the Red River Valley, a rich farming area that straddles the border of Northern North Dakota and Minnesota. She was valedictorian at Grand Forks Central High School, graduating in three years, before spending one year at Carleton College and graduating Phi Beta Kappa in 1954 from the University of Minnesota. It was there she would meet legendary golf coach Les Bolstad, who planted the seeds for what would later become a remarkable golf career and influence on her family.

Jody started her career as an English teacher in Crookston, MN, another farming town of 9,000 residents about 25 miles from the North Dakota border. She dated Glenn Gumlia, a star athlete out of Hamline University, who she met several years prior. During that time, she was crowned North Dakota's Potato Queen and the Cherry Blossom Princess, in Washington, D.C., in 1955. Jody and Glenn married that year, and while he started a successful local business, Jody founded a City Hostess Program to welcome new residents to Crookston. Early on, she showed her propensity for the gift of hospitality, which she shared generously with others throughout her entire life. Glenn and Jody lovingly raised three children - Leonard, Julie, and Roxy - whom they cherished and considered their highest priority and most important accomplishment in life.

Jody's life took on a new dimension in 1962 when her only sibling, Dennis died young, leaving the 2,500-acre family farm outside Hoople to Jody's care. Once a week, Jody would drive the 150 miles roundtrip to Hoople to oversee the operation. In 1972, she leased out the farm and created Folson-Gumlia, Inc., a highly successful potato brokerage company. Jody became a successful businesswoman before it was commonplace for women to be in business. She did this all from her kitchen table while never missing any of her three kids school and sports activities. Jody was also chosen by a U.S. Senator (ND: Milton Young) to lobby in Washington on behalf of the Red River Valley Potato Grower's Association, and in honor of her brother, was proud to co-found "Glenmore," an alcohol recovery facility in Crookston.

For decades, Jody played competitive golf in Minnesota, and nationally. She won numerous tournaments, including the prestigious Minnesota State Women's Amateur Championship in 1969. Under her guidance and direction, all three of her kids fell in love with the game, and spent most of their summers together on the golf course. They all played competitively with great success, which launched the media phenomenon known as the "Golfing Gumlias." Golf was a defining identity for the family in the 1970s: Leonard set the stage with early high school success; Julie became the youngest state champion in history at age 14, going on to win several more state, collegiate and national tournaments; and Roxy would go on to play golf for Stanford University.

By 1975, Glenn and Jody had moved to Edina, a suburb outside Minneapolis where Jody continued her interest in alcohol recovery services, serving on several boards, including the Johnson Institute. She went on to serve as the finance chairperson for Wheelock Whitney's run for governor in Minnesota in 1982, and she hosted the largest fundraiser for Minnesota Senator Rudy Boschwitz who served his state for many years.

Jody's 30-year marriage to Glenn ended in 1985, and she eventually decided to follow her children to California, where they had all settled with their families. She moved to the Palm Springs area and eventually met and in 1993 married Richard ("Dick") Parker, a World War II Air Force veteran who flew numerous missions over France during and after D-Day. Jody and Dick settled at The Vintage Club in Indian Wells where they played golf and tennis together and developed a wide range of cherished friends. They continually hosted family and friends, and traveled extensively. Their only fight was, "Who is the luckiest?" They enjoyed 14 wonderful years together, before Dick's passing in 2006.

A curious intellectual, Jody was a lifelong learner attending numerous conferences, writing festivals, and frequent Apple Genius Bar learning sessions. Her passions grew as she evolved and she was actively involved in fundraising and served on advisory boards for several of her favorite university athletic, business, nursing, and hospitality programs, in addition to many other charitable organizations. Jody's faith was her guiding light since she was a young girl. She was immersed in countless church organizations throughout her entire life, befriending and guiding numerous pastors and their families, as well as supporting many Christian organizations including Hope Lutheran Church (Palm Desert), Guideposts, Rev. Robert Schuller's Crystal Cathedral, Dr. David Jeremiah's Turning Point, Links International, and many more.

Despite all her interests and activities, Jody’s highest priority was being an involved mom and grandmother. As a grandmother, she was “Jo-Jo” to some, “Grandma Jody” to others, and was adored by all of them, a number that reached six by 2003 (James, Kimi, Drew, Matt, Katie, Ryan). She attended their birthdays, sporting events, school plays, and debates. It was not uncommon for her to drive 90 miles to watch a grandson play a hockey game, sitting freezing inside a cold ice arena. She would even sit intently from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at a middle school debate. She traveled across the country to watch her granddaughters play water polo matches, and watch grandsons play golf and baseball - where “JoJo brought the good luck mojo.” Her grandchildren could always count on her being in the stands for them, both in sports and in life, as her stamina in support of her entire family was inexhaustible.

Nicknamed “The Connector,” Jody packed more into 24 hours than at times seemed humanly possible. With her incredibly welcoming nature, inviting an eclectic group of 16 strangers to a dinner party and connecting them by night’s end as newfound friends was a common occurrence. Her encouragement to others to join her at church or speaking engagements, her love for teeing it up after 5 p.m. for nine more holes of golf, her opening questions to engage guests around her warmly decorated dining room table, and all the crazy Ole and Lena jokes she shared were memories her friends will carry for a lifetime.

Jody, our mom, will be missed dearly. There is so much we will miss but especially her positive encouragement and energetic attitude toward life. She leaves behind a huge void, yet, how blessed are we to call her “our mom.” Her giving and loving spirit and her legacy, lives on in all of us.

At the end of the day, life is all about making a difference. Our mom did just that, and had an impact on countless lives. We have no doubt that she was greeted in heaven with the words, “Well done my faithful servant” (Matthew 25:21).

A private family service will be held in July in Southern California, followed by a Memorial Service to celebrate Jody’s life in mid-November 2024 at Hope Lutheran Church, Palm Desert and the Vintage Club in Indian Wells, CA.

Janet Fay (Sommerland) Sabes

Sabes, Janet Fay (née Sommerland) age 83, of Wayzata, was born on February 17, 1941, and passed on May 15, 2024. She will be remembered for her devotion, kindness, and love as a wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, daughter, sister, and friend throughout her entire life. Janet attended the University of Minnesota, where she found Bob waiting outside her classroom, seeking his first date. Janet and Bob married on April 15, 1966, and soon had three sons, Jon, Steven, and Ross. While raising her family, Janet embraced and hosted her extended family, welcoming everyone with love and kindness. Athletic and strong, she started playing tennis when she wasn't busy raising her boys or helping Bob with his entrepreneurial ventures. She won the over-35 Minnesota State Doubles Championship in 1982 and the over-45 National Doubles Championship in 1987. Later, when her boys had grown up, she decided to learn how to play golf, quickly becoming one of her age's top local women's golfers. Janet described her life as fulfilled and incredible, always including an ode to Dr. Seuss's "Oh the Places You'll Go!", referencing the five years she and Bob spent traveling the globe in their floating condominium on "The World" and spending time at their homes in Wayzata, Palm Springs, and Las Vegas. She always expressed feelings of love, kindness, and gratitude to the individuals who touched her life, going out of her way to make everyone she touched feel special because she believed they were. However, the capstone of Janet's life was her family and grandchildren, which she valued above all else. She will be dearly missed by all those who knew and survive her. May she rest in peace for eternity. Janet is survived by her husband, Bob; sons Jon (Kristine), Steven (Maggie O'Gara), and Ross (Dawn); grandchildren, Jackson, Brooke, Lauren, Hanah, Morgan, Joe, Natalie, and Kelsey Sherer; sister-in-law, Raliegh Boukather; and an extended network of family and friends, all of whom will miss the bright joy and happiness she brought into their lives. She is preceded in death by her parents, Gordon and Mabel Sommerland; sisters, Karen Bush and Sandra; brother, Gary; parents-in-law, Moe and Esther Sabes; and an extended network of family and friends she loved and cared for. E. Thomas 'Tom' Welch

Welch, E. Thomas "Tom" passed away on the evening of May 8th, surrounded by family and holding the hand of Rita, his wife of 62 years. Tom was born August 24, 1938, in Minneapolis to Gene Welch, a government lawyer and Mary Ellen (Fleming) Welch, an Irish immigrant. Tom spent much of his childhood in Bismarck, North Dakota, where he excelled in academics and developed a lifelong love of sports. He was a man of great faith from an early age and wanted to become a priest, while attending school at Crosier Seminary in Onamia, Minnesota. After losing his father in a tragic car accident, Tom's mother remarried a cattle rancher, Robert (Bubs) Asbridge. Tom spent his formative years in Leith, North Dakota, working hard on the ranch. He graduated as valedictorian from Leith High School, and continued his education at the University of North Dakota, earning a degree in accounting and graduating law school in 1962. While attending law school, Tom managed the Student Union on campus, and began dating an undergraduate student and employee named Rita Czapiewski, who would become the love of his life. Following law school graduation, Tom married Rita and they moved to Minneapolis, where he worked for the US Treasury Department as a Trust Examiner. After a few years of gaining trust expertise, Tom worked at Marquette National Bank for 22 years, eventually becoming Senior Vice President. Over the next 22 years, he served as President of Resource Trust Company and BNC National Bank. Tom then moved on to Palisade Asset Management, where he worked as a partner until this past December. Tom believed it was important to give back to the community. He served on many charitable and nonprofit organizations as a board member including: Minneapolis Girl Scouts Association, Twin Cities Big Brothers Big Sisters, Basilica of Saint Mary's, Saint Teresa University, and most recently MicroGrants, as Chairman of the Board. Tom enjoyed his friends, neighbors, and colleagues who regarded him as quite the character, and quick to greet you with a smile, a witty remark, a story, and often a joke. He was always interested in everyone's life story - usually asking where they were from, about their journey, and even if they dreamt in a different language. Tom was extremely well read, often reading two books at a time, a fictional novel and a professional or non-fiction book. He had a thirst for knowledge and took college classes and seminars into his 80's, on subjects he wanted to know more about. In his spare time, Tom loved movies, was an avid tennis player, cyclist and Minnesota sports fan. Tom also loved to travel, and traveled extensively throughout the country and world with many friends and family. His favorite overseas destination was Ireland, where he maintained close ties with his aunts, uncles, cousins and other relatives. Most importantly, Tom loved spending time with his family. He was a loving husband, a cherished father, and a very fun and giving grandfather. He passed down his love of travel to his family and sought out many family vacations. Family favorites include: skiing at Lutsen Resort, time on Gull Lake at Grand View Lodge, New York City, and of course, his cherished Ireland. Donovan followed in the footsteps of his parents, maternal grandparents and great-grandfather by becoming a teacher. He worked in the Madison Metropolitan School System, the Milwaukee Public Schools System, the Minneapolis School District before completing his career at Stillwater Area Public Schools. During Donovan's professional career, he was unique in completing not just one but two master's degrees. The first in computer education at Colombia University and the second a Master of Arts in Spanish at Middlebury College. Donovan was a teacher by genetics and by nature, he enjoyed sharing knowledge with his students and his loved ones. A simple way to find something out was to pose a question about a topic to him and you would shortly have a relevant article or history of the topic in your inbox. Donovan ultimately retired from teaching due to the physical and logistical pressures of needing both a kidney and heart transplant, which slowed him down but did not stop his adventures. Never one to be idle, Donovan explored life to the fullest. He loved to travel and was on a quest with his husband Greg to visit every state in the USA. He also loved to travel internationally, with Mexico being one of his favorite destinations as it incorporated travel and his love of the Spanish language. He played both the piano and trumpet, much to the delight of his Mother and consternation of his brother. He was active in Boy Scouts and 4-H. Two interests that he developed and nurtured early in life were computers and movies/TV Shows. These interests developed in different aspects of his life. His interest in computers led Donovan to achieve a master's degree in computer education and incorporate this expertise into his professional career, for a time, as both a Computer and Spanish Teacher. His love of movies/TV Shows took deep root in his life as he loyally attended the Wisconsin Film Festival, the Free Range Film Festival and other film festivals in the Minnesota area. Many of his friends remember fondly his attendance and hosting of the Oscars Parties. He was active in the community, with his family and friends. A few examples are that he volunteered with Kidney Transplant support groups as a Facilitator and participant. He also pursued hobbies in gardening, computers, and traveling. Donovan was an original 'foodie'. He loved to try new restaurants, especially Mexican cuisine, but was open to just about anything. He definitely had opinions on what was good and what was not and loved to share and compare notes with others on their food exploits. Donovan's adventures continued even in his own home as he was an avid and adventuresome cook. He perfected his art at a young age on the unsuspecting taste buds of his younger brother, parents and friends as he experimented with new concoctions and recipes. His kitchen was his 'laboratory' and 'playground'. The family would like to thank the compassionate staff at M Health Fairview Southdale Hospital. They would also like to express their gratitude to Donovan's nephrologist, Dr. Rajiv Shah, for his many years of devoted care to Donovan over the last fifteen plus years. His knowledge and support were invaluable to the family and his dedication and friendship to Donovan as a patient were unparalleled. Tragically the love of Donovan's life, Gregory Paul Williams Cassidy of Minneapolis, Minnesota, passed away shortly after Donovan. Donovan is survived by his brother Rodger Stennis (Sandy) Williams of Fitchburg, Wisconsin; aunts Carol Pickett and Barbara Puckett of Chicago, Illinois; cousins, Harlan Williams of Houston, Texas, Bretton (Stephannie) Williams and LaNelle (Mounir) Williams of Columbus, Ohio, Chris Puckett, Eric Puckett, Thomas Deneral Brown, Carol Felicia (Kevin) Davy of Chicago, Illinois; a host of family members and cherished in-laws. He is also survived by the 'niece of his heart' - Alexis Costa. A Celebration of Life to celebrate the lives of Donovan and Greg will be held on June 1, 2024 in Fitchburg, WI. A repast will take place during the Celebration. In order to properly plan, please notify Rodger Williams at Celebrationoflife@spectrum.net if you're planning to attend the Celebration of Life. Flowers and cards are welcome in memory of Donovan. Alternately the family will be starting a fund to support movies in honor of Donovan's love of his favorite independent film festivals: contributions, flowers or cards may be sent to Rodger Williams, 5738 Schumann Dr., Fitchburg, WI 53711.
