Gophers (11-6, 0-4) at a glance: Their poor conference start hit 0-4 after 17 turnovers — including eight passes that went out of bounds, by coach Richard Pitino’s count — upended a second-half nine-point lead at Michigan in a 62-57 loss Saturday. … The Gophers are at home for five of their next seven games. Hoping for a spark, Pitino said he expects to make some lineup changes, although he didn’t say what they would be. … In Big Ten play, the Gophers have had 44 assists to 58 turnovers (a .8-to-1 ratio) after totaling 273 assists to 176 turnovers (1.6-to-1) in the nonconference schedule. … Last season’s home victory over Iowa (95-89 on Feb. 25) helped nudge the Gophers to the edge of the NCAA bubble, but they landed in, and ultimately won, the NIT.
Iowa (11-5, 2-1) at a glance: The Hawkeyes held a 39-28 halftime lead over visiting Michigan State on Thursday, but the Spartans unloaded from three-point range in the second half, hitting their first eight attempts and ultimately winning 75-61. … Iowa has won its only two true road games this season, both against high-profile opponents: North Carolina (Dec. 3) and Ohio State (Dec. 30). They did lose on neutral floors to Northern Iowa in Des Moines and to Texas and Syracuse in New York. … Devyn Marble is gone, but the Hawkeyes have gotten big years from the frontcourt; 6-9 Aaron White has shown his strong all-around game while leading the team with 15.9 points and 7.2 rebounds per game, and 6-9 junior Jarrod Uthoff adds 11.4 ppg and 6.9 rpg.
