Yes, yes, Minnesota is home to multiple handfuls of great muskie waters, not least Lake of the Woods, Vermilion, Minnetonka and Forest, as well as the Mississippi and St. Croix rivers. But Mille Lacs is unique among these producers, because it appears certain to cough up the next state-record muskie. In fact, it probably has, on multiple occasions. But anglers who’ve caught these 55- to 58-inch specimens in recent years have released them to swim again, rather than hang them on a wall. That, too, makes Mille Lacs special and ensures still more of its muskie fanatics will have big-fish stories to tell.
