Space, the frightful frontier

"Star Trek" fever comes with a severe case of the chills in the most riveting offering from a new pack of "Black Mirror" episodes. In "U.S.S. Callister," Jesse Plemons plays a lonely nerd whose fantasies about being Capt. Kirk take a dark turn when he steers his ambitions into a high-tech video game. Cristin Milioti, so terrific in "How I Met Your Mother" and "Fargo," keeps her hot streak alive in the role of a shanghaied crew member determined to live long and prosper.

Let's get the party started

Ringing in the new year with your TV as company has never been so tempting, especially if you're dying to see if Mariah Carey can redeem herself after her disastrous appearance last time around on "Dick Clark's Rockin' New Year's Eve With Ryan Seacrest 2018" (7 p.m. Sunday, KSTP, Ch. 5), a party that will also include a performance by Britney Spears. Kathy Griffin isn't returning to her CNN perch as telegraphed by the new title "New Year's Eve With Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen" (7 p.m. Sunday, CNN), but you'll see plenty of familiar faces during Fox News' "All-American New Year" with co-hosts Lisa Kennedy Montgomery and Jesse Watters (7 p.m. Sunday). Steve Harvey's campaign to conquer the world continues with "Fox's New Year's Eve With Steve Harvey: Live From Times Square" with Andra Day and Maroon 5. Those who want a "classier" approach to the holiday can opt for "NY Philharmonic New Year's Eve: Bernstein on Broadway" (8 p.m. Sunday, TPT, Ch. 2).

Keep 'em coming

No matter how much you might imbibe this holiday weekend, you can't keep up with Nick and Nora Charles, the two-fisted drinking detectives in "The Thin Man." One of cinema's best cocktails of comedy and thrills, the 1934 film is followed by five sequels, all of which will keep you intoxicated through the night.

7 p.m. Sunday, TCM
