Chart: Matt Cooke's career controversies

  • Updated: July 6, 2013 - 12:22 AM

March 2002: With Vancouver, Matt Cooke sucker-punched the Wild’s Jason Marshall, breaking Marshall’s nose. The next meeting between the teams, Cooke refused to fight Marshall.

February 2004: Cooke was suspended two games for spearing the Wild’s Matt Johnson, who received five games for slashing Cooke.

January 2009: In his first season with Pittsburgh, he received a two-game suspension for hitting Carolina’s Scott Walker in the head.

November 2009: Again suspended two games for a hit to the head, this time against the Rangers’ Artem Anisimov.

March 2010: His hit to the head against Boston’s Marc Savard caused Savard to miss two months because of a concussion. Cooke was not suspended, but the NHL instituted rules to more heavily penalize blind-side hits to the head.

February 2011: Cooke was suspended four games after hitting Columbus’ Fedor Tyutin into the boards from behind.

March 2011: Cooke was suspended for the last 10 games of the regular season and the first round of the playoffs because of an elbow to the head of the Rangers’ Ryan McDonagh. Cooke apologized and vowed to change his style of play. He hasn’t been suspended since.

February 2013: Cooke’s skate cut the Achilles’ tendon of Ottawa’s Erik Karlsson, ending the star defenseman’s season. Cooke was not suspended, but he was accused of injuring Karlsson on purpose by Senators owner Eugene Melnyk.
