The Vikings selected Brandon Burton with the 139th pick overall in the fifth round. It was the eighth pick of the round.

School: Utah

Size: 5-11, 190 pounds. Age: 21

The skinny: The Vikings had to add depth at the cornerback position, especially with Cedric Griffin coming off two ACL tears in the past two years. Burton is likely to push 2009 third-round pick Asher Allen. Ideally, the Vikings would like to have Griffin, Antoine Winfield and Chris Cook play in the nickel package but Griffin and Cook (knees) have had issues staying healthy. Allen struggled at times when given an opportunity to play. Veterans Lito Sheppard and Frank Walker will be free agents and aren't expected to return.

Inside information: Burton started 25 of 37 games games at Utah after redshirting in 2007 and had 101 tackles with three interceptions and 18 pass breakups. He started all 13 games last season as a junior and finished with two interceptions and three pass breakups. Earned All-Mountain West second-team honors. Burton is big enough to contend with big receivers and can jam off the line. However, he doesn't possess great speed.

Pro Football Weekly summary: "Good-sized, confident, finesse, cover man who is most comfortable manning up and using his length and natural cover skills. Could develop into a No. 2 but is not an elite athlete and does not project as a core special-teamer, and soft playing style will turn off some teams."

Up next: The Vikings will have another fifth-round pick (150th overall and 19th of the round).

Judd's take: The pick might not be a surprise but it isn't a good sign that Pro Football Weekly describes his playing style as soft and says he isn't a score special-teams player. That being said, he did earn Mountain West Conference Special teams player of the week honors against Brigham Young so perhaps we'll have to wait and see what the Vikings got here. The PFW description sounds a bit like 2007 third-round pick Marcus McCauley, who is no longer in the NFL to the best of my knoweldge.

The quote: "I'm real technically sound. I like pressing [and] playing man-to-man. I have very good ball skills. I'm a big ball hawk so I play the ball real well when it's in the air. Some people say I'm a finesse corner. I like to think I'm finesse and I can get nasty too." -- Burton.
