Phil Miller covered three seasons of Twins baseball, but that was at a different ballpark for a different newspaper. Now Miller returns to the baseball beat after joining the Star Tribune as the Gopher football writer in 2010, and he won't miss the dingy dome for a minute. In addition to the Twins and Gophers, Miller covered the Utah Jazz and the NBA for six years at The Salt Lake Tribune.
Twins catcher Joe Mauer left Sunday's game for a pinch-runner in the seventh inning with a bruised right quadriceps injury and is day-to-day.
The Twins announced that the injury occurred on a home-plate collision with Rickie Weeks in the second inning. Mauer wasn't in the lineup on Saturday because of a sore right hamstring, and that leg was clearly bothering him during Sunday's game.
Mauer finished 3-for-4 with two RBI. After the collision with Weeks, he had three singles, including the one that tied the game in the seventh. One inning earlier, Mauer hit a ball that bounced to the right-field wall but could only jog to first base.
