Phil Miller covered three seasons of Twins baseball, but that was at a different ballpark for a different newspaper. Now Miller returns to the baseball beat after joining the Star Tribune as the Gopher football writer in 2010, and he won't miss the dingy dome for a minute. In addition to the Twins and Gophers, Miller covered the Utah Jazz and the NBA for six years at The Salt Lake Tribune.
Denard Span is back in the lineup for the Twins after missing three games with a right shoulder injury, but Jason Kubel (sore left wrist) and Joe Mauer (jammed left knee) are not in there.
Updates to come...
Update: Mauer is getting treatment and is day-to-day, Manager Ron Gardenhire said. Asked how concerned he is, Gardenhire said, "They told me he tweaked it. The doctors checked him out -- there was no fluid, no anything. So when they tell me I should be concerned I will be, but last night they told me no, he tweaked it, and he should be fine. There’s no swelling or anything."
Kubel was swinging the bat with authority during batting practice and could return to the lineup Tuesday. Kubel might even be available to pinch hit tonight.
All three pitchers the Twins will see in this series have good movement on their pitches. Jeanmar Gomez held the Twins to one run on four hits over five innings on Aug. 6. Fausto Carmona tossed a shutout against the Twins on Sept. 9, and Carlos Carrasco blanked the Twins for 7 1/3 innings the next night.
