Series preview: Twins at Detroit

The Twins took two of three games at Detroit last month, including a pair of impressive one-run victories, one of which came in a game started by Justin Verlander. The Twins return to Comerica Park with outfielders Josh Willingham and Oswaldo Arcia healthy and newly signed designated hitter Kendrys Morales on the roster. … Second baseman Brian Dozier homered in his last at-bat against Porcello and is batting .316 against him. Twins will make sure Dozier, who injured his back Wednesday at Toronto. will be good to go. … Willingham is batting .389 against Porcello with two doubles and two home runs. … First baseman Joe Mauer is batting .357 against Sanchez but is 1-for-10 against Smyly.


Detroit is searching for answers after entering Thursday with eight losses in 10 games, which has enabled the rest of the division to close the gap on them. … Offense has been one problem, as the Tigers have failed to scored at least four runs in seven of those 10 games. They were averaging 3.5 runs a game this month. … Torii Hunter and Ian Kinsler had slumped badly in June, batting .194 and .154, respectively. … How much will Al Alburquerque pitch in this series? He is tied for third in the AL with 32 appearances and pitched in all three games when the Twins visited in May.
