Twins' Deduno will have shoulder surgery

Twins righthander Samuel Deduno will have arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder Wednesday and will need about two months to recover.

The Twins have been leaning toward Deduno having surgery over the past few days, and General Manager Terry Ryan made the decision official on Friday. A magnetic resonance imaging exam of the shoulder revealed fraying of the labrum.

“He’s going to have a cleanup of that shoulder,” Ryan said. “It is not a serious surgical procedure, but it’s something that we think that needs to be done.”

It’s a tough way for the 30-year-old Deduno to end the season. He made more strides toward establishing himself as a reliable starter, going 8-8 with a 3.83 ERA and giving up only seven home runs over 108 innings. But he battled shoulder soreness late in the season and was pulled from an Aug. 29 start against Kansas City when his pitches lost their sharpness.

The surgery, and subsequent rehabilitation, dashes any chance Deduno had of pitching in winter ball.

Mauer on road trip?

Catcher Joe Mauer had a setback Wednesday in his recovery from a concussion suffered on Aug. 19. But he has had two good workout days since.

Friday, he hit the weight room and treadmill and did some work in the pool, and the Twins were pleased with the results.

“He had a pretty good day,” Ryan said, “which is encouraging.”

Ryan said the team is considering bringing Mauer on the upcoming road trip to Chicago and Oakland as he continues his recovery.

“It is under consideration,” Ryan said. “If he’s good enough to travel he is going to. And if he’s not, he won’t.”

Kings of the road

Twins manager Ron Gardenhire has owned a recreational vehicle that he has enjoyed driving in the offseason for several years, and Rays manager Joe Maddon recently joined the RV community.

“His wife drove from California all the way to Florida in a 32-footer,” Gardenhire said. “I told him, ‘That’s embarrassing, Joe. You need to get her a 40-foot RV. It’s comfortable.’ ”

Less than a year after buying the 32-footer, Maddon has upgraded to a 40-footer and plans to take it to spring training. He has been poring over all the reading material and is downloading apps on his smartphone.

“I would believe Gardy would be more the subscribe-to-the-magazine kind of guy as opposed to the apps kind of guy,” Maddon said.

Gardenhire said if he didn’t own a home in Fort Myers, Fla., where the Twins train, he would drive his RV down to camp — and keep it in the parking lot of the Lee County Sports Complex.

“When you travel in baseball you don’t see anything, you fly over,” he said. “When you are in an RV, you can see everything. We can stop when you want.”
