Failed expectations

These players were expected to be major contributors to the Twins in 2013 and beyond, but all five played their way back to the minors during the season.

Kyle Gibson

Comment: Twins are left to hope the former first-round draft pick’s problems are linked to first full season after Tommy John surgery.

2013: 2-4, 6.53 ERA in 10 starts; 69 hits, 20 walks in 51 innings

Aaron Hicks

Comment: Another former first-round pick who won the center field job in spring training, then didn’t hit.

2013: .192 BA in 81 games, with dismal .259 on-base percentage

Chris Parmelee

Comment: Twins hoped he’d prove himself a worthy successor to Justin Morneau at first base; club might now need to re-sign Morneau.

2013: .223 BA in 83 games (66 strikeouts and only 27 walks)

Scott Diamond

Comment: Twins envisioned the lefty as the leader of this year’s staff, but offseason elbow surgery might have contributed to his problems.

2013: 5-10, 5.52 ERA in 20 starts; 136 hits/107 ⅔ innings

Vance Worley

Comment: Twins thought they had obtained a proven major league starter in offseason trade with Phillies, another plan gone awry.

2013: 1-5, 7.21 ERA in 10 starts; 82 hits in 48 ⅔ innings
