The Gophers received a verbal commitment Sunday from Raheem Layne, a defensive back from Sebastian, Fla.
The 6-1, 175-pound Layne appears to be an under-the-radar recruit with no other reported offers. Gophers defensive coordinator/DB coach Jay Sawvel has a history of turning such players into success stories, including NFL draft picks Eric Murray and Cedric Thompson.
Layne gives the Gophers 14 commitments for the Class of 2017. He announced his commitment on Twitter:
