Gophers linebackers coach Mike Sherels was admitted to a local hospital Tuesday for what the team called "unexpected surgery," noting that the 31-year-old Rochester native also had a medical procedure last week.

Sherels' brother, Marcus, did not make the trip to Cincinnati with the Vikings for Saturday's preseason game.

Mike Sherels is in his third year as the Gophers linebackers coach. He played for the team from 2003 to 2007 and was a team captain his junior and senior year.

"Mike is Minnesota football," Gophers coach Tracy Claeys said in a press release Wednesday. "There are few things that are more important to him than this university and this football program. We ask that you respect his privacy and that of his family during this time."
