Godspell
Opening: Dann Peterson directs one of the quintessential vestiges of those groovy early 1970s. Long before he launched "Wicked" on the American public, Stephen Schwartz wrote this musical based on the gospel according to Matthew. John Michael Tebelak wrote the script, based on the parables and ministry of Jesus of Nazareth, but seen through the lens of the counterculture. Several pop hits were spun off the musical, including "Day by Day." Peterson has a cast of 13 at Theatre in the Round, with musical direction by Robert Ragoonanan. (8 p.m. Fri.-Sat., 2 p.m. Sun., ends July 27, TRP, 245 Cedar Av. S., Mpls., $24, 612-333-3010 or TheatreintheRound.org.)
