Wisconsin DNR shuts down shooting range

MADISON, Wis. — Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources officials have closed a parcel of public land in Columbia County that's become an unmanaged shooting range.
Shooters have been using berms at the Swan Lake Wildlife Area as a shooting backstop for years. The problem is the makeshift range lies only about a quarter-mile from a subdivision. Residents say the shooting has gotten out of hand in recent years, with gunfire starting as early as 6 a.m. and stray bullets sailing into their yards.
The DNR closed the parcel on Wednesday with a snow fence and posted signs. People can still access the rest of the property, however.
Agency officials also said they've negotiated more public access at other ranges and gun clubs around the region to preserve shooting opportunities.
