ST. PAUL, Minn. — A Republican state senator with a background in law has entered the Minnesota attorney general's race.
Scott Newman of Hutchinson got into the race Thursday, a day before his party is to endorse a candidate at the state convention in Rochester. No other serious GOP candidates have emerged to challenge Democratic Attorney General Lori Swanson.
The office has been reliably Democratic for more than four decades. Newman argues that the office has grown too partisan.
Newman is a trial lawyer in his second Senate term. He previously served in the state House.
A third candidate, Brandan Borgos, is running on the Independence Party ticket.
