Let the awards season begin

David O. Russell’s all-star Abscam-inspired drama “American Hustle” was named best picture by the New York Film Critics Circle, the first of the big critics awards. A day later, Spike Jonze’s “Her,” starring Joaquin Phoenix, nabbed the top prize from the National Board of Review. … Nominations are in for the Annie Awards, widely seen as a precursor to the Oscar for best animated feature. On the list are “The Croods,” “Despicable Me 2,” “Frozen,” “Monsters University,” the French film “Ernest & Celestine” and the Japanese offerings “A Letter to Momo” and “The Wind Rises.” … Oscar Isaac (“Inside Llewyn Davis”) is teaming up with director J.C. Chandor (“All Is Lost”) for the drama “A Most Violent Year.” … Christoph Waltz is rumored for the villain’s role in “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.” … Emilia Clarke (“Game of Thrones”) and Brie Larson (“Short Term 12”) are on the shortlist to play Sarah Conner in the “Terminator” reboot. … Marcia Gay Harden will play Christian Grey’s mother and Rita Ora his sister in “Fifty Shades of Grey.”
