Twins catcher Joe Mauer won his fifth Silver Slugger Award, tying fellow 2013 winners Miguel Cabrera of Detroit and Robinson Cano of the Yankees. The trio of American League stars was one behind Boston's David Ortiz, who won his sixth Silver Slugger.

"It's always nice to be selected and honored by the managers and coaches across the American League," Mauer said. "I take a lot of pride in my approach at the plate and want to thank Louisville Slugger for the award and the Minnesota Twins for giving me the chance to play the game I love."

The winners, determined by a vote of MLB managers and coaches, are considered the best offensive players at each position. The awards were announced Wednesday night for the American and National leagues.

Mauer hit .324 with 11 home runs and 47 RBI for the Twins before sustaining a concussion August 19 and missing the rest of the season.

Mauer was the only Twin to win a 2013 Silver Slugger, but there were four ex-Twins receiving the award: Ortiz, J.J. Hardy of Baltimore, Torii Hunter of Detroit and Michael Cuddyer of Colorado.
