Rep. John Kline returned Tuesday from a congressional trip to Afghanistan and Pakistan, where he met with Gen. David Petraeus, Pakistan's Prime Minister and other top foreign and military leaders.

Speaking to reporters in Washington Tuesday, Kline and House Armed Service Chairman Buck McKeon lauded the progress that's been made on the ground in Afghanistan.

Kline, who has made numerous trips abroad as a congressman, said it was remarkable that the three congressmen on the trip could walk through streets without body armor in places where there was heavy fighting a year ago.

In Afghanistan, Kline also had the chance to meet with his son, who is on his third tour overseas with the Army.

"The highlight of the trip for me, of course, was I had a chance to visit a few hours with my son," said Kline, a retired Marine. "He's always a terrific source of information for me as well."

While in Pakistan, Kline said the congressmen voiced concerns about the government arresting an American with diplomatic immunity, a case that's increasing tensions between the two countries. Kline and McKeon said the dispute could put U.S. foreign aid to Pakistan at risk.
