A new principal is taking over at Bloomington's Jefferson High School this summer: Jaysen Anderson, who's finishing up the school year as assistant principal at North High School in the North St. Paul-Maplewood-Oakdale school district.

Anderson starts as principal July 1, taking the title after a team of Bloomington staff, parents, student and district administrators whittled selection down from a candidate pool. Jefferson principal Kevin Groebner is retiring after 39 years in education — with 17 of those spent at Jefferson High School.

Anderson started out as a social studies teacher in Brooklyn Center at both junior and senior levels and the alternative program, according to a release from the Bloomington district. He also served as school director at Urban League Academy High School.

Anderson started in North St. Paul in 2012 as John Glenn Middle School's dean of students, before moving into his assistant principal role in the district's North High School. He's propelled equity and technology initiatives forward at the school and worked on flipped classrooms and digital learning, the release said.

"He has tremendous building presence coupled with a calm, unflappable, approachable demeanor," North High School principal Greg Nelson said in the release. He called Anderson a "gifted and innovative leader."
