The Gophers volleyball team won two more matches decisively on Saturday, to finish 4-0 in Alabama-Birmingham/Samford tournament that opened the season.

Sophomore outside hitter Daly Santana had 15 kills and 14 digs to lead the U to a 25-18, 25-12, 25-21 victory over Georgia State in its third match.

Santana's kill total were two shy of a career high. The Gophers, ranked sixth nationally, used 11 players in the match, including freshmen Paige Tapp and junior Adrianna Nora, who made their first college starts.

Then the Gophers swept Samford 25-17, 25-14, 25-14 as senior outside hitter Ashley Wittman had 17 kills on 28 attacks with one error, and 13 digs.

United wins on late goal

Connor Tobin scored in stoppage time as Minnesota United FC edged host San Antonio 3-2 to keep the Scorpions (0-6-0) pointless in the NASL fall season. Pablo Campos of United (2-2-1) scored twice, once in each half, against his former team.

• The Gophers women's cross-country team, under first-year coach Sarah Hopkins and ranked No. 19 in the coaches' preseason national poll, had its first competition on Saturday, an intrasquad 5K race at Les Bolstad Golf Course. Molly Kayfes, of Maple Grove, finished first in 18 minutes, 24.8 seconds.
