For those with Mother's Day fishing plans, treat Mom to a fancy afternoon tea the previous day at the Avalon Tearoom & Pastry Shoppe. Co-owners Becky Radel and Jan Boe and their crew preside over a lovingly correct tea service, their butter-laden pastries (love those scones) aim to please and the savory items are handled with care. Cost is $31 per person. Two settings -- 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. -- on May 12. Reservations required.

The a la carte brunch menu at Tria Restaurant Bar & Market covers an impressive number of bases -- ricotta pancakes, wild mushroom omelets, walleye po' boys, lobster linguine, chicken pot pie, bee pollen- and fennel-crusted sea bass -- and all entrees are served with a complimentary glass of orange juice, sparkling wine or a Mimosa.
