UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar will fight again, according to multiple sources who have spoken to the media in the last week.

Despite his desire to start training again and be ready to fight in either the spring or summer, there are still questions relating to his recent bout with diverticulitis and if he will be able to get back into competitive shape without undergoing another round of surgery.

"Brock Lesnar is definitely coming back to fight," said Greg Nelson, owner of the Minnesota Martial Arts Academy and one of Lesnar's head trainers. "He's just kinda coming up slowing, training, getting his body ready and being smart with his recovery."

Nelson's comments were made this morning on MMA Live, ESPN.com's weekly MMA webcast.

"He's been going into the doctor and making sure everything is going well and he'll make sure to go in for a couple of more tests to make sure he's 100% ready to train when he starts up."

Lesnar's lead trainer, former University of Minnesota head assistant wrestling coach Marty Morgan, talked a bit about the situation at the National High School duels in Rochester last week.

"Everyone's asking about his health. He had a bout with a bacterial infection in his intestinal tract in November, and now we're just kind of working our way to get back to where we need to get back to fight."

The status of Lesnar's health has been the best kept secret in MMA, since the few people that he's talked to about the situation have all kept quite.

"I don't give more answers than that. Brock don't give more answers, (and) his agents don't give more answers." Morgan said. "There's really only a handful of people who know where we're at, whether it's moving forwards or backwards."

Nelson told MMA Live he has had limited contact with Lesnar the last few weeks.

"We've been communicating a little bit back and forth. Obviously e-mails and texting back and forth and occasional phone calls," Nelson said. "He really likes his privacy. He likes to spend time with his family and once he's not training he's spending 100% of his quality time with his family and especially with his new son."

When asked about how long it will take Lesnar to recover and get back into shape for training, Nelson said he believes Lesnar will be able to recover faster than many people would in the same situation.

"Being the athlete that he is, and you know just a strong tough farm guy, you know he's used to dealing with adversity and stuff like that. I know that he'll be able to come back you know faster than people expect, but we're not going to push the river at all."

"We want him to be 100% healthy when he starts to train, but being a tough guy and being an athlete for the majority of his life he's been able to deal with adversity like this and other things so I'm sure once he gets going he'll be at the top of his game real quick."

Lesnar is scheduled to have a press conference with UFC President Dana White in Las Vegas next week. Speculation is they will announce that he intends to take on the winner of the Frank Mir vs. Shane Carwin fight scheduled for UFC 111 on March 27.

There is the possibility once Lesnar starts to train full-time, he will find out he is unable to get back to 100% without another round of surgery for his diverticulitis. Should he undergo surgery again, he would most likely be forced to relinquish the heavyweight title and could be out of action for up to two years.

Cole Konrad set to debut

Another former NCAA champion from the University of Minnesota made news in the MMA world this week when it was announced that two-time heavyweight champion Cole Konrad would make his MMA debut next Saturday, January 23, in Fargo, ND.

The 25-year-old Wisconsin native holds the record for most consecutive wins at the University at 76 and was undefeated in his junior and senior year.

Konrad has been helping Lesnar with his MMA training for his last few bouts, but originally had not planned on going into MMA after his collegiate career. He tried out for the New York Jets in 2007, despite not playing football in college, but he failed to make the team.

Konrad will be taking on 2-0 fighter Gary "Chief" Hamen for the Martial Arts Xtreme promotion's Max Fights 8, at the UP Center.
