In the west metro cities, Bloomington and St. Louis Park will have primaries on Sept. 15 to narrow the field of candidates for city council seats up for election Nov. 3.

BLOOMINGTON: Based on filings that closed Tuesday, the primary contest is for an at-large seat now held by Karen Nordstrom, who joined the council in 2006. She is seeking reelection, and John (Stretch) Kjenstad, Tom Tomlinson and Ryan Gopaul also filed for the seat.

ST. LOUIS PARK: Three candidates filed for the Ward 4 seat and will have a primary run-off. They are Julia Ross, Thomas Peterson and Bill Theobald. Incumbent C. Paul Carver did not seek reelection.

NO PRIMARIES REQUIRED

Filings were also wrapped up for other races that do not require primaries. They will appear on the Nov. 3 ballot:

BLOOMINGTON: District I incumbent Steve Peterson will face Jim Algeo for reelection and District II incumbent Rod Axtell is facing a challenge from Thomas Hulting.

ST. LOUIS PARK: Incumbent Ward 1 Council Member Susan Sanger filed for reelection with no opponent.

In Ward 2, candidates are Anne Mavity and Claudia Johnston Madison. Incumbent John Basill did not seek reelection.

In Ward 3, Sue Santa filed for office without opposition. Incumbent Loran Paprocki did not seek reelection.

MINNETONKA: After a huge show

of interest for an open seat on the City Council late last year, only two new contenders have filed for two seats.

Mayor Terry Schneider, who was appointed by the City Council after former Mayor Jan Callison was elected to the Hennepin County Board, has filed for reelection with no opposition.

Amber Greve, who was appointed by the City Council to an at-large council seat in January, is seeking reelection. She will face opposition from David Asp, who was another one of the 37 people who sought appointment to the seat.

Incumbent council member Dick Allendorf filed for reelection to his at-large seat. He will face challenger Bonnie Bina in the election in November.
