A jealous gunman ambushed a visitor to a hotel room next to Mall of America, where the victim thought he was going to meet with a woman but ended up being punched and shot, according to charges filed Tuesday.

Matthew T. Poncelet, 25, of Faribault, Minn., was charged in Hennepin County District Court with second-degree attempted murder and second-degree assault. Poncelet remains jailed in lieu of $500,000 bail.

The man who was shot late Saturday at the Best Western on Killebrew Drive drove 40 miles to a hospital in Faribault that morning and was treated for leg wounds. The 37-year-old, who is from Faribault, was expected to survive. Authorities have not released his identity.

According to the criminal complaint:

Bloomington police officers met the victim in the hospital. The man said he arranged through texting to "hang out" with a woman in her hotel room. She told him to just come in because the door would be open.

He walked into the dark room and was punched by a man. As the victim ran down the hall, he was shot in the leg. He got in his car and drove to Faribault.

After speaking with the victim, police went to the hotel room and arrested Poncelet as he was trying to flee out the window. A woman in the room said she and Poncelet, her boyfriend, were at the hotel for a family gathering. She described the victim as a friend.

She said she was asleep in bed during the assault and shooting. The woman's sister, who was also at the hotel, said Poncelet was angry that his girlfriend had been texting the man.

A search of Poncelet's vehicle in the parking lot turned up a handgun hidden in the engine compartment.
