What started with reports of robberies Friday night in St. Paul near Summit Avenue and the Mississippi River ended with a man considered a robbery suspect shot to death, police said early Saturday.

Police were called about 10:30 p.m. to the area on a report of a robbery, but authorities believe at least two people tried to rob at least two adults.

When officers arrived, they found the man with the gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene by St. Paul fire medics.

Those at the scene were being questioned to determine what exactly happened. "Investigators are actively looking into the matter to find out what happened moments before the incident took place," St. Paul police said in a release. No names were being released.

A second suspect described as a man in his 20s with curly hair wearing a plaid shirt and jeans fled into the woods, according to audio acquired by the website Police Clips.

St. Paul police and the Ramsey County medical examiner's officer were working Saturday to determine the dead man's identity. They were asking for anyone who could help identify the suspects or who had any information to call the St. Paul police homicide unit at 651-266-5650.
