Ride the MVTA bus to the State Fair

The Minnesota Valley Transit Authority will have special buses running between the south metro and the Minnesota State Fair starting Thursday and running through Sept. 7.

The fair buses will operate on weekdays (except Labor Day) from the Burnsville and Eagan transit stations and on weekends and Labor Day from the Burnsville, Eagan and Marschall Road (Shakopee) transit stations.

The round-trip fare is $5 for riders age 5 and older. There are no one-way fares. Payments must be made in bills or coins; passes are not valid for the State Fair buses.

On weekdays, buses will leave hourly starting at 8 a.m. from Burnsville and starting at 10 a.m. from Eagan and will run to the fair until 7 p.m.

On weekends, buses will run every 30 minutes from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. from Burnsville and Eagan and every hour from Shakopee.

Buses will return from the fair to Burnsville, Eagan and Shakopee on the same schedule from noon to midnight.

Murder and mystery at heart of book club

The Scott County Library is hosting a Murder by the Book Club starting Sept. 3 at the Shakopee Library, 235 Lewis St. S.

All book club meetings will be from 2 to 4 p.m. the first Thursday of each month through December.

The September meeting is a get-to-know you gathering, and copies of the first book selection will be available to check out. On Oct. 1, "Haunted Ground," by Erin Hart, will be discussed; on Nov. 5, "The Maltese Falcon," by Dashiell Hammett; and on Dec. 3, "Bury Your Dead," by Louise Penny.

Peddler's Market at LeDuc Estate

A combination flea market, farmers market, art fair and bake sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the LeDuc Historic Estate, 1629 Vermillion St.

The Peddler's Market is an annual fundraiser for the Friends of the LeDuc, a group that provides volunteers and funding to the site.

Outdoor concert features Irish music

Dunquin, led by Sherry and Don Ladig, and featuring Irish music will wrap up the free outdoor series put on by the Hastings Concert Association.

The show is from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the LeDuc Historic Estate in Hastings. Tickets for a tour of the estate can be purchased before the show. In case of bad weather, the concert will be held at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, 409 9th St. W.

Police hold coloring contest for kids

Children age 12 and under who live in Shakopee can win a chance to ride in a squad car and have ice cream with a police officer in the Shakopee Police Department's third annual coloring contest.

Winners in each age group can invite a friend for a tour of the police department, then a ride to the Dairy Queen for a treat.

Entry forms and coloring sheets can be found at www.shakopeemn.gov/crimeprevention. Entries are due by 4:30 p.m. Sept. 4 by mail or in person at the Police Department, 475 Gorman St.

Folk-rock duo is last of summer series

The 2015 Huber Park Performance and Event Series will come to a close Thursday with a folk-rock concert by Lehto & Wright.

The show will be at 7 p.m. at Huber Park, 150 Fillmore St. N. People should bring blankets or lawn chairs.

Show off Shakopee in photo contest

The annual Show Off Shakopee photo contest starts Sept. 1 and continues through the end of month.

This year's theme is "The City in Action," and will focus on photos that show residents interacting with city staff, enjoying the parks and trails and using city services.

The contest is open to amateur and professional photographers who live, work or go to school in Shakopee.

in police work

The Savage Police Department is offering a Citizens Academy on Thursdays starting Sept. 10 and running through Oct. 15.

Each hands-on class will be held from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Topics will include investigations, use of force, traffic stops, patrol procedures, a tour of the holding cells and evidence room and more.

Applications are available at the Savage Police Department from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. or by calling crime prevention specialist James Caauwe at 952-882-2600. The deadline to apply is Friday.
