Students at Augsburg College on Wednesday mourned the loss of Jason Stevens, 19, after learning that the freshman had been struck by a vehicle shortly after midnight on westbound Interstate 94 near campus and died.

Stevens, of Rochester, was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, where he was pronounced dead.

He was on foot in the area, but a spokesman for the State Patrol said that the circumstances surrounding Stevens' death were not yet fully understood and that no driver had come forward yet to claim responsibility.

Several 911 calls reported a body on the freeway, most of them saying it was near the Riverside Avenue overpass, Lt. Eric Roeske said. Some callers said a gray or silver passenger car was involved, he said.

Augsburg College President Paul C. Pribbenow sent the following message via Facebook on Wednesday morning: "Our community is deeply saddened by the death of Jason Stevens, a first-year Augsburg College Honors student from Rochester, MN, and member of the cross-country team. We will gather as a campus community during Chapel at 11:20 a.m., Thursday, September 22, to remember Jason and honor his life and contributions to the Augsburg community."
