Crime alert: Nighttime robberies on Midtown Greenway

Posted by: Matt McKinney under Public records, Public safety, Urban living Updated: January 19, 2012 - 1:48 PM

A pair of robberies along the Midtown Greenway, one of them at gunpoint, prompted the police Thursday to issue a warning and description of two suspects who may have committed both crimes.

The men in both crimes were about six feet tall, dressed in black hoodies, caps and trousers. One of the suspects may be limping.

A witness to the first crime described the men as Native American or Hispanic and aged 20 to 25 years old. The suspects in the second crime were described as Native American men aged 18 to 22 years old.

The city released basic information about each robbery: In the first, two victims walking on the Greenway said they were robbed at gunpoint by two men near the intersection with Elliot Av. S. at 11:20 p.m. on Jan. 9. The victims were not hurt, but they had their cell phone, cash and credit cards stolen.

On Monday night, two men knocked a lone cyclist off of his or her bike, at 10:30 p.m. at the Greenway's intersection with 12th Av. S. The men demanded money, took the victim's backpack and fled when another cyclist approached.

Don Greeley, a crime prevention specialist with the police department's Third Precinct, issued the following tips:

Carry a cell phone. Make yourself familiar with the locations of the “blue light” phones on the Greenway. If you see anything suspicious, call 9-1-1 immediately.

Be alert to people loitering on the trail.

Become familiar with the locations of the exit ramps.

Ride or walk with a friend if possible, particularly at night.

If you see someone ahead of you on the trail, trust your instincts.

Be prepared to turn back and go the other way if you feel you should.

Contact the Midtown Greenway Association about their bike patrol at 612-879-0103.
