The man who was shot and wounded by two police officers in an Edina condo over the weekend has been charged with assault and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Colin Reinsmoen, 35, was charged Tuesday in Hennepin County District Court in connection with the confrontation Saturday in the condo, where he had been living with his parents. The criminal complaint alleges that Reinsmoen pointed a semiautomatic BB gun at officers before they fired.

While the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office continues its investigation, Police Chief Dave Nelson said Wednesday that he believes "the officers handled a very challenging situation in an appropriate and reasonable manner under the circumstances," according to a statement issued by the city.

The city identified the officers involved Wednesday as Keith Boerger and David Boosalis. Boerger has been with the department since 2000 and became an officer in 2003. Boosalis has been employed with Edina police since 2007 as an officer. Both are on routine paid administrative leave.

Reinsmoen was initially in critical condition; his condition was upgraded to serious but stable on Sunday.

His father, Robert Reinsmoen, told the Star Tribune that Colin has been fighting severe depression for years and has been in trouble with the law.

Colin Reinsmoen's criminal history includes two convictions for drug possession, two for possession of drug paraphernalia, and one each for robbery, fleeing police and making harassing phone calls. He also has three convictions for violating a domestic abuse no-contact order.

According to the complaint, Colin Reinsmoen threatened his parents after they confronted him about getting psychological help and they called 911.

Colin Reinsmoen was on a couch and covered with a blanket when officers arrived. He stood up "with one of his hands in a clutched position covered by the blanket," the court document read.

An officer asked to see what was under the blanket, and Reinsmoen refused to comply. Moments later, he tossed aside the blanket and pointed the weapon "directly at an officer," the complaint added, and the officers fired.
