Dozens of Hopkins residents were evacuated from their apartments Monday while police resolved a standoff with a man who was wanted for an assault in Brooklyn Center.

The standoff began about 10:30 a.m. when police arrived at the 32-year-old man's apartment in the 500 block of Mainstreet. It was clear that the man, who is known to local police, was not going to surrender peacefully, said Hopkins Sgt. Michael Glassberg. The Hopkins SWAT team, with help from the Eden Prairie Police SWAT team, negotiated with the man.

After about six hours, police forced the man out by shooting a gas irritant into his apartment.

Glassberg said the man, who was arrested, is wanted in connection with a felony-level assault that occurred in Brooklyn Center over the weekend.
