Isle Royale is open from April 16 through Oct. 31 and is accessible by ferry from Grand Portage, Minn., and Houghton and Copper Harbor, Mich. For information on the two ferries departing Grand Portage, go to grand-isle-royale.com.
Lodging options are limited to camping and Rock Harbor Lodge, a rustic-but-pricey facility. Rates in the peak season are $256 a night at the lodge, which also offers camper cabins for $52 a night.
