Commuters will benefit from a new state law that requires public transportation agencies to provide free rides on Election Day, Tuesday.

The law was passed by the State Legislature last year and is designed to help get people to the polls.

Rides on Metro Transit, MVTA, Maple Grove Transit and SouthWest Transit buses will be free from the beginning to the end of the service day. In addition. rides taken on light-rail trains, the Northstar commuter line and the Metro Red Line also will be free.

Passengers will not be required to show a pass in order to ride.

The law pertains to fixed-route service only. Those who use Transit Link, Metro Mobility or dial-a-ride services will still have to pay for their trips.
