More than 7,600 State Fair fans sounded off in the Minnesota House of Representatives unscientific survey. and folks scarfing down mini-donuts and proto pups were also spitting out opinions.
An overwhelming majority (70 percent) believe the state should refuse to "provide any additional public subsidies to the NFL" for bringing the Super Bowl to Minnesota in 2018. An even larger percentage (71 percent) support the state's current system that allows voters to register on Election Day.
Perhaps unsurprisingly for the beer-laden Fair crowd: 64 percent, or nearly 5,000 survey participants, believe it is time to do away with the state restrictions that keep liquor stores closed on Sunday. The Sunday sales supporters and opponents have long flowed into the Legislature but the stores have remained closed.
Those beer-drinkers, however, are not fond of e-cigarettes. More than 5,000 of them (66 percent) said that e-cigarettes should be regulated like tobacco cigarettes. Lawmakers grappled with similar proposals earlier this year but decided not to adopt measures to treat the two the same.
A majority of Fair-goers (54 percent) also support raising the state's gas tax by 5 cents to "help fund the backlog of highway and bridge needs around the state." Forty percent said they opposed that proposal. A majority (50 percent) does not believe online lottery sales should be prohibited and 52 percent say it should be more difficult to put constitutional amendments on the ballot.
Results were more mixed on other controversial subjects.
Survey-takers were nearly evenly divided on whether adults should be allowed to use marijuana recreationally and split on whether snack foods like chips and popcorn should be taxed like candy and soda is.
The idea of allowing felons to vote once they are released from prison also drew a mixed response. Forty-seven percent of people asked said they should not immediately have their voting rights restored. Another 44 percent said they should.
