Ike Reilly's new single leads the "Rock for Rules, Vol. 2" charitable charge

Just in time for Saturday’s party for the “Rock for the Rules, Vol. 2” compilation album, the Twin Cities’ favorite Libertyville, Ill., rocker Ike Reilly has dropped a new single and video to promote the cause and begin the roll-out of his next album. Titled “Hangin’ Around,” the new tune is one of 57 tracks (!) on the three-hour benefit collection, which was in the works when former Turf Club staffer/ringleader Leah Rule died just before Christmas this time last year. She will be remembered Saturday at the Turf with a listening party for the record followed by a live set from Ol’ Yeller (8 p.m., $3).

Talking by phone from Libertyville, Reilly said the song made sense for the compilation since the video includes a lot of footage shot at the Turf Club and its downstairs counterpart, the Clown Lounge. Leah and her husband Rob Rule were co-running the venue when Reilly staged his now-legendary four-gig run in 2000, which permanently earned him a diehard Twin Cities fan base. “Leah was just always so nice to us. She’s still a big part of that place,” Reilly said.

As for the song, it’s the first track to be issued off of “Return to Paradise,” the new Ike Reilly Assassination album due sometime next year (release details still TBD). Reilly said “Hangin’ Around” is about “the differences between management and workers, and how even if you always wanna be on the side of the workers, sometimes you sell out.” The video is one in a series he shot with his pal David Pasquesi, the Chicago area actor who plays Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ ex-husband on HBO’s “Veep.” Although it’s a rather ominous and creepy clip, Reilly sweetly noted, “That’s my 80-year-old mom in it.”

“Hangin’ Around” is available for download along with all the other tracks for a minimum $5 donation via the “Rock for the Rules, Vol. 2” Bandcamp site. The other big track of note on the set is Slim Dunlap’s “Bar Chord,” which Dunlap wrote about the bar the Rules’ used to run in Knapp, Wis. He had demoed it before his debilitating stroke in 2012.

Other acts who donated tracks to the new compilation include: Little Man, Dillinger Four, the Rank Strangers, Roe Family Singers, Soviettes, Impaler, Dan Israel, Kruddler, Red Flags, Jen Markey, the Beatifics, Martin Devaney, Germaine Gemberling, 10w40 and Eric Kassel, the latter of whom also help put the collection together.
